VALLEY OF FIRE HIKING

Valley of Fire is one of southern Nevada's most scenic landscapes. Speckled with ancient petroglyphs and furnace red Aztec sandstone, this area is great for scenic hikes and photography alike.

The grey and white limestone is mixed among other geologic features that date back to the Jurassic period. Many day hikes are available to all skill levels, from short easy walks to moderate treks through the backcountry.

Winter season allows for longer exploration due to the comfortable hiking temperatures. Spring wildflowers dot the roadsides with hues of purple, yellow, and orange. Summer is better resigned to short walks and stops at historic sights.

Don't forget to bring your camera. If you like exploring ancient rock art there is plenty to see here. Stop at Atlatl rock and study the pictures carved into the stone. A short hike to Mouse's Tank reveals plenty more, along with a a secret hiding spot in the desert where renegades escaped the law.

Visit the abandoned town of St. Thomas or stop at one of several natural springs on the way back. The scenic drive gives you a spectacular view of Lake Mead as you wind back around to Las Vegas.
