A positive attitude, patience, attention to detail, and organizational skills are necessary. Hiking guides should be confident with basic on-trail gear maintenance and repair, including loading and fitting backpacks, setting up tents, and using a variety of cookstoves and fuel types. You must always act in a professional manner, and dress according to your job function.

Must be willing to work long hours in harsh environments, be physically fit, and able to lift 50+ lbs overhead. While hiking guides may specialize in one area, they are encouraged to support and cross-train in other disciplines.
